Hey everyone!
Hubie Sounds is back on the interweb airwaves this Tuesday. This time around, as well as the usual selection of hot new joints and stone cold classics, we’ve got an exclusive guest mix from essex-based breakbeateers
Curl And Dean. Here’s all you need to know about the dynamic duo…
Curl & Dean grew up in different parts of Essex immersed in hip hop culture, spraying walls & spitting into mics in the long hot summers of their youth. It was after the dungaree & floppy hat raves of ’89 that Curl bought his first keyboard, soon adding a 707 & 950 sampler, he started to PA to the ‘hands in the air’ rave circuit.
Meanwhile, Deano Bobalino (Boba), with his love for hip hop beats, started to learn the art of DJing, getting his first pair of decks as an xmas present at the age of 15. It was not long before he started to DJ & MC on the local pirate radio stations before throwing himself into the ‘hardcore you know the score’ rave scene.
After several releases on his own progressive label, Curl was introduced to Boba, who at the time was a member of the breakbeat band Axcess, which lead to a remix courtesy of Axcess for his label ‘Free for a Girl’. However, it was during a summer break in Ibiza, that Curl, with his early house and progressive background was introduced by Boba to the sound of breaks. This introduction convinced them – whilst supping yet another cold San Miguel on their inflatable shark lilos – to blend their musical production styles, thus creating the Curl & Dean Sound.
Shortly thereafter, Big Square Records head-bearded-honcho (and one-time Hubie Sounds guest DJ) Big Nick D asked the lads to remix a Ben & Lex tune ‘Floorburn’, this was followed by a further release of their own ‘Kabul’ which featured an excellent Merka Remix on the flip. The original was also licensed on the V2 released compilation LP ‘Urban Deluxe’.
Their follow-up release was the rolling sounds of the ‘Snow Buddha’, also released on Big Square Records with remixes from Future Funk Squad & MI Loki. The success of the ‘Buddha was literally measured in inches, causing the snow to fall all over the U.K from release, this little beauty earned a number 1 spot in the DJ Download Beats & Breaks Chart, a DJ magazine recommendation & support from many, including Jay Cunning’s Kiss FM show.
The lads also had a tune, ‘Shining Path’, featured on the NSB Uncovered compilation, released towards the end of ’09 on Ape Records. As well as throwing their own parties around London town, Curl & Dean present their own radio show on IBreaks Radio. Their next release, ‘Bantha’ is out soon on Scarcity, with remixes from Beta, Run Riot, Mesmer, Deriwer & Ruido, the lads also have some remixes due for release soon on Scarcity and Yellow Finger.
