Dub Elements and Pheex

Print PDF

Dub Elements and Pheex hailing from Spain join with Trans:verse to give you Tech Wreck and Zphere.

Dub Elements has had an array of quality releases this year on the likes of LOT49. Then we have Pheex who has had some casino firing tracks out on Audiogore. This collaboration results in a mean and heavy peak time adventure. Tech Wreck is self explanatory title. It is a tech influenced track with fangs and a big bassline! Zphere is geared to the more traditional heavy breakbeat enthusiast. It is a constant battle between punchy drums, reese and house stabs!

bybb lucas

Lucas began the love for Electronic Dance Music at roughly the age of 11 when he was given his first keyboard that had its own beat sequencer. From there he began composing basic beats and familiarizing himself with the structure of electronic music.
Fast forward a few years and it was in college where he heard breakbeats and progressive music for the first time and was hooked.
Purchasing turntables in 2002, he aspired to have more involvement with the music and to eventually produce his own original material.
Joining Orbital Grooves in January of 2003, he ran a weekly show called LightSpeed for more than 3 years. In mid 2006, he retired the weekly show and began picking up random slots to interact more with different audience groups and djs.
Musical influences include his father who is a guitarist of 30 years and progressive artists such as Hybrid, Nubreed, Luke Chable, Greyarea, Burufunk, Infiniti, and the classic breaks artists like Icey, Sharaz, Fixx, and more.

Lucas launched IQ Sounds (IQS) in January of 2007. IQS is an independent record label whose goal is to change the way that society views EDM. Another goal of the label is to provide a venue for fellow underground artists to gain exposure and recognition. You can visit IQ Sounds at http://www.iqsounds.com

This one is an uptempo-type electro banger.  The flawless production and groovin' mash-up of bass and kicks makes this one HOT!  Throw in some scratchy synth action and badass samples and what you have is a solid track with a great live feel.

Micro-Drumulator - This one is gonna be a dancefloor killer.  Deb combines smart kicks and a rhythmic syth producing an exotic landscape that feels well-polished and textured. The track also boasts a melodic cascade that will make your flesh tingle with pleasure behind the bass-heavy goodness that is, Micro-Drumulator.  This one will have them begging for more with vocoded samples pulling the audience through the song and locking them into electro-bass breakbeat madness.

Redux - Freaks Show e.p. Expressillon & DJ MIX

Artist:   Redux
Title:   Freaks Show e.p.
1:  Bouncing Pigs  (4/4 / House / Electro)
2: Cirkalia  (Breaks)
3: Bassline Circus  (Dubstep)
Label :  Expressillon
Catalog n°:  EXPR303
Format:  12’’ & Digital
Release Date Mid/ End March 2010

Even if it’s only in 2007 that Redux name makes it appearance on the electro scene , Nikko – the man who hides behind this guise – has been a familiar name in the more up-tempo register with not less than 20 releases along with Karbon 14 sound system in the mid 90’s.

Keeping his experimental approach of music, Redux, having achieved maturity, doesn’t need to force the pace anymore to captivate and electrify the crowds and starts to flirt with a vibe more close to electro-house and breakbeat.

Very fast he signs a first e.p. on American label Portamento but it’s in 2008 with the title ‘‘Diskobreaks’’ that he puts the basis of a more personal style which kicks straight in with its pounding analogical bass lines and fractured sounds harmonized with rhythms and samples from hip-hop, funk or disco. First selected on Level 75’ “Spicy Cunts” compilation then released on Katorza  - a nu label he runs with Maelstrom – in 2009, this track has gained much respect and support from International artists such as  Popof, Crookers, Rico Tubbs, Aquasky, Malente, Cut la Roc or Lee Mortimer
to name a few.

Redux follows up this successful run with several critically acclaimed remixes on Katorza and not less than seven original pieces signed on Miles Dyson’ label PlasmaDigital. Meanwhile he works and composes the soundtrack for electro circus show ‘Sweatlodge’’ including “Cirkalia” and “Bassline Circus” tracks released today on Expressillon aside dancefloor-lifting “Bouncing Pigs”.

What is Breakbeat

Breakbeat (sometimes breakbeats or breaks) is a term used to describe a collection of sub-genres of electronic music, usually characterized by the use of a non-straightened 4/4 drum pattern (as opposed to the steady beat of house or trance). These rhythms may be characterised by their intensive use of syncopation and polyrhythms.

History

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, hip-hop DJs (starting with Kool DJ Herc) began using several breaks (the part of a funk or jazz song in which the music "breaks" to let the rhythm section play unaccompanied) in a row to use as the rhythmic basis for hip-hop songs. Kool DJ Herc's breakbeat style was to play the same record on two turntables and play the break repeatedly by alternating between the two records (letting one play while spinning the second record back to the beginning of the break). This style was copied and improved upon by early hip hop DJs Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Wizard Theodore. This style was extremely popular in clubs and dance halls because the extended breakbeat was the perfect backdrop for breakdancers to show their skills.

In recent times, the term breakbeat has become synonymous with the many genres of breaks music which have become popular within the global dance music scene, including big beat, nu skool breaks and progressive breaks. DJs from a variety of genres, including house and techno, work breaks tracks into their sets. This may occur because the tempo of breaks tracks (ranging from 110 to 150 beats per minute) means they can be readily mixed with these genres, whereas the comparatively fast speed of jungle and drum and bass (160-180 bpm) may have restricted the utility of these subgenres to DJs playing slower-tempo music. Some artists well known for breakbeat include DJ Icey, Stanton Warriors, Deekline and Wizard, Hybrid, Huda Hudia, The Brainkiller, Paket, The Freestylers, NAPT, Pendulum, Adam Freeland, Rennie Pilgrem, The Breakfastaz, Ctrl Z, Freq Nasty and Plump DJ's.

Breakbeats are used in many hip hop, rap, jungle, and hardcore songs, and can also be heard in other music, from popular music to background music in car and jean commercials on the radio or TV.
